CERT medical training and American Red Cross First Aid training have distinctively different focuses. CERT training is based on a disaster model which assumes a large number of victims needing attention quickly. Red Cross First Aid training, on the other hand, is based on an individual model which assumes a single victim needs treatment.
But while the training focuses are different, the training itself: the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the victim taught is remarkably similar.
Herein lies the opportunity to get a head start on your 2010 Churchill preparedness resolution.
While waiting for the next CERT class to begin (usually they are offered twice a year, in spring and fall), you can warm up by taking a First Aid class offered by the local Red Cross chapter here in Eugene. First Aid classes are taught frequently, depending on the specific class it's one or two sessions. Also, classes are typically small in size. At the successful conclusion, you receive a Red Cross certification card current for one year.
