Dear Watch captains and neighborhood leaders,

We saw a lot of car thefts last week, especially along W.11th between Pearl Street and Danebo. As usual, there were an inordinate number of 1980s-1990s Hondas and Toyotas stolen. Your best protection against this is a steering wheel club.

We sell these at cost at our substations (6th and Monroe, or 13th and Alder) for $11. If you don't drive your car in the wee hours, also consider our CAT program. That involves putting a sticker on your car window that allows officers to stop the car if they spot it moving about in the middle of the night. Alarms are an option as well.

If you leave anything valuable in the car, that's one more reason it may be stolen, so remember to remove all valuables from your vehicles.
