National Public Lands Day in the West Eugene Wetlands

Volunteers are needed to plant bulbs, remove invasive species, and help clean up Amazon Creek in celebration of National Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. Gloves and tools will be provided. Volunteers will be rewarded with a free poster, t-shirt, coupon for admission to a national park, a lunch, and the satisfaction of working to improve our public lands alongside fellow community members.  Several organizations are coordinating this year's event: the Bureau of Land Management, WREN, Sierra Club Many Rivers Group, Eugene Stream Team, West Eugene Wetlands Partnership, and Eugene REI.

Native American Wetland Cultures Day

Kalapuya Elder, Esther Stutzman, is organizing a day of activities for all ages of the general public that includes story-telling, basket-making demonstrations, drumming, dancing, a display and discussion of the building of the traditional Kalapuya canoe, and more. Everglades' Most Dangerous Reptile

Join us for special presentation, on another wetland ecosystem – the Everglades. South Florida’s Everglades are home to alligators, crocodiles, and four species of venomous snake.  Which is the most dangerous?  None of the above, according to Park Ranger Tim Downey.  His pick is the Burmese python, a relative newcomer to the marshes and mangrove swamps.  He will tell us why in an illustrated talk. Tim Downey has been a park ranger with the National Park Service for ten years, with stints in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in California, Katmai National Park in Alaska, and Everglades National Park in Florida.  He is currently a summer site host for the West Eugene Wetlands. Meet down at the yurt at 751 S. Danebo Ave.

Along the way, local experts will have educational displays to help you discover the many wonders of the wetlands. Learn about wetland plants, animals, restoration projects, and the education center. Join BLM botanist, Cheshire Mayrsohn, as she guides us through the amazing world of wetland plants. From rushes to wildflowers, wetlands are filled with a huge diversity of plant life, and Cheshire is a treasure trove of knowledge about this native vegetation. Be prepared for an evening walk over a gravel trail. Meet at the West Eugene Wetlands Office, 751 S. Danebo Ave. This program will be 7-9 p.m. and is intended for adults.
