WREN Wander at Luk-wah Prairie

2011-11-08 09:00

WREN Wanders are casual walks through various West Eugene Wetlands sites each 2nd Tuesday of every month. Luk-wah, a Kalapuyan word meaning “grass,” is an aptly named 83 acre recreation site known for its tufted hairgrass (Deschampsia cespitosa) community. A recent prescribed burn of 48 acres in Luk-wah Prairie offers a historic example of burning techniques used to improve the health of the bunchgrass communities and the wetland ecosystem.

Participants are asked to meet at the western-most turnout, east of the intersection of Willow Creek Road and W 18th Ave in Eugene. WREN will provide binoculars. For more information call 541.338.7047 or email info@wewetlands.org FREE!

WREN's A Beaver's Tale

2011-11-05 16:45
2011-11-05 18:15

WREN staff and volunteers invite you to join them for a sunset exploration of the West Eugene Wetlands. A Beaver’s Tale is an opportunity for folks to gather for a 30 minute presentation followed by a one hour exploration of the West Eugene Wetlands in search of beaver scat, tracks and clues that help answer some common questions: What do beavers eat? Why do beavers build dams? How do beavers mark their territories?

Participants are asked to meet at the educational yurt, adjacent to the WREN office at 751 South Danebo Avenue in Eugene. Folks attending should bring water and binoculars and wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing.

For more information call 541.338.7047 or email info@wewetlands.org. Our fees for this program are $5 for members and $7 for non-members.

Neighbors,

The CAN welcomes EWEB Commissioner Joann Ernst to our January General Meeting.

Below is EWEB's description of Joann's visit.

The Eugene Water & Electric Board is Oregon's largest public utility, serving nearly
87,000 electric customers. As a public utility, EWEB does not operate to earn a
profit or to meet the investment needs of stockholders. Instead, EWEB has a
five-member Board of Commissioners who are elected by Eugene residents to serve
their interests. Joann Ernst, one of the five elected Board members, represents an
area roughly equivalent to the Churchill, Far West, Jefferson/Westside and Friendly
neighborhoods (City Council Wards 1 & 8). Her main areas of interest as an EWEB
Commissioner are energy conservation programs, renewable power, protecting the
McKenzie River, and facilitating community involvement and education.

Commissioner Ernst has requested an opportunity to meet with Churchill neighbors to
share information on some upcoming EWEB projects and respond to your questions about
utility issues. More specifically, Joann will discuss the underlying factors
leading to the Board's decisions to raise rates in 2011, introduce EWEB's upcoming
energy resource planning effort, and share some insights on the utility's first new
General Manager in twenty years, Roger Gray. Neighbors who can't attend the meeting
are welcome to contact their EWEB Commissioner directly at joann.ernst@eweb.org.
