An open house to provide information about the West 11th Avenue Corridor Study is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Bascom Room of the Eugene Public Library, 100 W 10th Avenue.
 
The W11th Avenue Corridor Study is an endeavor by the City of Eugene to seek short-term remedies for transportation problems in west Eugene. The development of the study follows removal of the West Eugene Parkway from area transportation plans. The corridor study takes a look at existing conditions in the corridor and identifies strategies to enhance travel through improvements to bicycle and pedestrian facilities, corridor safety, management of accesses, changes to traffic signal timing and intersection modification projects. If implemented, these strategies will yield improvements to safety and mobility in the corridor.
 
Other long-term solutions will be needed to address increasing travel demand to and through the corridor as the area's population and employment continues to grow. The West Eugene Collaborative (WEC) vision for a multi-way boulevard and the West Eugene EmX Extension (WEEE) transit project are other efforts to identify long-term solutions to meet the community's transportation needs.

* Proposed station locations

* How traffic will flow on West 11th Avenue with EmX (turns, property access, the flow of through-traffic)

* Design challenges and opportunities

The 2009 Summit theme is "Collaborating for a Livable Eugene." Based on input from the survey taken last summer and the Neighborhood Empowerment Committee, we are planning a fast-paced combination of large sessions, small breakout groups, information displays, and lunch -- with lots of time for networking with elected officials, city staff, other neighborhoods, and representatives of various community organizations.

The Bailey Hill Road Safety Coalition has been working to reduce pedestrian danger on this street. At the Churchill Area Neighborhood meeting on January 23, 2008, Eugene Public Works communication manager, Eric Jones, agreed to take this safety issue into the Public Works formal planning process.

That process begins with three public design workshops. They will all be held on Wednesday evenings in the Churchill H.S. library from 6 to 8 p.m. The dates are April 9, May 7 and June 4, 2008. Anyone who has an interest is invited to attend.

The first workshop on April 9 will highlight work completed to date and will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about the concept of a "road diet" and how this treatment could be applied to Bailey Hill Road. The second design meeting will use maps to have planners mark out the design ideas generated by the participants at these meetings. City staff will present a refined concept design at the final workshop on Wednesday, June 4, 2008.

The goal of this process is to develop a concept design that addresses operational and safety issues with the input of nearby residents, the broader community, important stakeholders and City engineering staff.
